Greetings friends. Today I want to talk about coloring your die cuts with some Copic markers to add a bit of shading for more interest on your card.
For the card itself, I used the new Forget Me Not die and decided to leave the flowers white rather than coloring them blue. I also cut out a pot from the Simple Garden Pots die using orange cardstock. I could have left the pot as it was, but I thought it would be much more interesting if I added some color to the edges of the pot, underneath the rim of the pot, and inside the pot to look like dirt. Here is a close up:
The flower pot on the right is what you get by cutting it out from orange paper. The flower pot on the left is one that I colored with markers. I took the darker YR24 marker and added color to the outside of the pot and used the lighter YR21 marker to soften the darker color. Adding darker colors to the edges and leaving the center light will trick the eye into thinking the item is dimensional and has curved edges. Can you tell from the picture that I left the very center the original cardstock color and added no marker there?
To finish the pot, I added a line under the rim with the darker marker and used that same marker to color the inside of the pot. You can't really tell if it is just a shadow on the inside of the pot or if it is dirt.
For the rest of the card, I cut out a window in the center of kraft cardtock and put a piece of heavy vellum behind the window. It is hard to tell from the picture, but the entire kraft "window" is popped up onto a white notecard using some foam tape. I then added the stems, flowers, and some yellow pearls.
I hope this inspires you to try coloring your die cuts more. You can achieve so many different looks!
